Antarctica's Forbidden Signal

Antarctica's Forbidden Signal — an exploration from JitterSnap's Mystery Atlas collection.

The Signal

They say Antarctica is untouched, a wasteland of ice, uninhabitable, unimportant.. But in 2002, a signal was received, and then everything went quiet..

The Discovery

The Vostok Research Station reported it first, a low-frequency pulse, rhythmic, intelligent, it came from beneath the ice more than two miles down... Within 24 hours, US satellites registered the same signal, then, blackout... The research teams were pulled, files sealed, one report leaked with just one line highlighted, do not respond... Some believe it was a natural occurrence, a shifting ice shelf, an anomaly, but others, insiders, whistleblowers, say something was found down there, a structure, older than human civilization..

The Unfolding

Then came the deaths, a Russian scientist was reported missing, another returned, unable to speak, only scribbles, spirals and waveforms, filling his journal... The official explanation, nothing was found... Operations were too dangerous, stations closed for repairs, but military flights have increased over that region ever since, and the signal it never stopped... So what is broadcasting from the deep?.

The Question

Is it a warning, a memory, or something far older, still waiting to be answered?
