Earth's Building Blocks Never Left the Neighbourhood
A sweeping re-analysis of meteorite isotopes says Earth was assembled entirely from inner-Solar-System material, with almost nothing smuggled in from beyond Jupiter. That upends how we explain our oceans.
The Discovery
For decades, planetary scientists have argued that somewhere between 6 and 40 percent of Earth's raw material drifted in from the outer Solar System, beyond Jupiter. That imported matter was the favourite explanation for how a dry, rocky planet ended up with oceans.
New work says the delivery never happened. Researchers at ETH Zürich re-analysed isotope ratios across ten different element systems in meteorites — including samples tied to Mars and the asteroid Vesta — and compared them with Earth's own fingerprint. Their conclusion: Earth is built entirely from non-carbonaceous, inner-Solar-System material. The outer-Solar-System contribution is under two percent, and possibly zero.

What Makes It Strange
Older studies leaned on just one or two isotope systems, mostly oxygen. The ETH team treated the problem as a data-science exercise, running statistical comparisons across ten systems at once. The result, published in Nature Astronomy, surprised even its authors — no evidence of any exchange between the inner and outer reservoirs.
That points to Jupiter as the great gatekeeper. As the young gas giant ballooned, its gravity carved a gap in the protoplanetary disc, walling off the outer Solar System. The new analysis suggests that wall was nearly perfect.
The Ripple
If Earth's water did not ride in from beyond Jupiter, then the volatile ingredients for our oceans must already have existed in the hot inner Solar System. That is a genuine puzzle — and the team's next target.
The finding also predicts Mercury and Venus follow the same pattern, though neither has yielded rock samples to test it yet. Earth, the new numbers insist, was home-grown all along.
