Is Your Body Even Real?
Is Your Body Even Real? — an exploration from JitterSnap's Reality Glitches collection.
The Signal
You're driving through the countryside, the map shows no towns nearby, but there, just off the road, is a city, small, quiet, familiar in a way you can't explain..
The Discovery
You stop, you walk through it, and when you come back the next day, it's gone... Let's talk about the places that don't stay put, cities that appear once, and vanish forever, glitched locations... In 1971, two British couples were driving through France... They stopped at a rustic hotel, no phones, no modern amenities, staff wore old clothes, the food was simple, charming, but strange... When they returned days later to retrieve something they'd left behind, the hotel no longer existed, locals had never heard of it, it was never there... Then there's the story of Dover, Kansas, a group of teens exploring rural backroads took a wrong turn, and ended up in a town that didn't match any map, neat homes, empty streets, every house lit, but no people..
The Unfolding
They tried to leave, the GPS looped, no exit roads, then, static, and they were back on the highway, with no memory of how they got there... What if some locations are, temporary, generated by the system for reasons we don't understand?.. Others believe these towns are access points, gateways to mirrored versions of our world, portals that don't look like sci-fi wormholes, but ordinary places that don't belong... How would you know if you passed through one, your watch might skip, the sunlight might feel wrong, the silence, too deep, your shadow might bend the wrong way?.. Some people say these locations are created, to test reactions, to log your behavior, to study your awareness of the glitch... So the next time your GPS leads you somewhere strange, and the roads don't match..
The Question
Ask yourself, did this place exist yesterday, or did it just load for you?
