Pompeii’s Buried Palestra Is Being Mapped Without a Spade

At Pompeii’s Palestra Grande, aerial spectral images and two ground surveys reveal different pieces of a buried puzzle—without declaring every anomaly a wall.

The Location

Pompeii's Palestra Grande is a real, mappable complex inside the archaeological park. Its exposed remains are familiar; the ground beneath them is less so. An October 7 study in Archaeological Prospection reports an integrated survey of this area, where its authors say systematic archaeological geophysics had not previously been carried out.

What's There

The researchers paired drone-based multispectral photogrammetry with ground-penetrating radar and electrical resistivity tomography. The drone mapped surface spectral patterns; the ground instruments probed shallow material below. The team then compared those signals in QGIS, including a semi-automatic cross-correlation approach.

  • Surface view: detailed orthophotos and spectral-index maps show potential traces.
  • Below-ground view: radar and resistivity profiles test shallow anomalies with different physical sensitivities.
  • Interpretation: agreement can help prioritise a place to investigate; disagreement also matters.

The History

Pompeii's ancient urban fabric was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius. Excavation has exposed many features, but opening more ground can cost time and disturb vulnerable material. The paper's case study focuses on planning future work in a protected archaeological setting, not announcing a newly found city.

The Mystery

The study finds that the tools complement each other, not that every coloured patch is a buried building. Their depth ranges and sensitivities differ. Precisely which unexcavated features caused particular signals remains a question for careful archaeological interpretation and, where appropriate, future investigation.

Before anyone digs, the ground is already telling several different stories.
