What can geology actually tell us? G. Etiope and colleagues' 2011 study in Earth and Planetary Science Letters investigates abiotic methane flux from the Chimaera seep and nearby Tekirova ophiolites. The paper's title frames the mechanism in terms of gas exhalation associated with low-temperature serpentinization. That is a research question about rocks and gas, not a claim that a monster existed.

The ancient story and the measured geological phenomenon belong to different kinds of evidence. One is a cultural narrative; the other is a real gas seep investigated by earth scientists.
