The Mammal Footprints Too Big for the Cretaceous

Giant tracks preserved in an ancient Brazilian desert point to a mammal relative far larger than the usual dinosaur-age stereotype. The bones are missing, but the footsteps are not.

The Discovery

Researchers studying fossil trackways in southern Brazil's Botucatu Formation have described mammal-like footprints of startling size. The Early Cretaceous traces were left in what was then a vast dune field, long before most mammals approached the dimensions familiar today.

The study in the Journal of South American Earth Sciences identifies exceptionally large examples among tracks assigned to mammaliaforms — the broader evolutionary group containing mammals and their closest extinct relatives. Based on the prints, the largest track-maker has been estimated at roughly 1.55 metres long.

What Makes It Strange

The familiar picture of Cretaceous mammals is a world of tiny, nocturnal creatures staying beneath dinosaur feet. Fossils have already complicated that image, but these tracks push it further: their maker may have been comparable in length to a large dog or a mountain lion.

Tracks are evidence of an animal in motion, not a skeleton. They preserve foot shape, stride and behaviour while withholding the exact species. The researchers discuss large mammaliaform candidates, including triconodont or cladotherian relatives, but the footprints cannot provide a secure taxonomic identity by themselves.

Something unexpectedly large crossed the dunes, then vanished from the body-fossil record.

The Implications

If the body-size estimate is right, mammaliaforms reached large sizes during the dinosaur age more often — or earlier — than the surviving bones currently show. That would expand the ecological range available to the group beyond the usual small-bodied narrative.

The conclusion remains an inference from trace fossils. Soft sand, gait and preservation can alter a print, so the tracks do not prove the existence of a specific giant species. They do, however, record feet far beyond the scale expected from the standard story.

What Happens Next

Comparisons with other Botucatu trackways and better-preserved mammaliaform skeletons could narrow the list of possible makers. New traces may also reveal whether this was an isolated heavyweight or part of a hidden population whose bones have yet to surface.
