The Milky Way Has Giant Ripples

A map of more than 30,000 molecular clouds reveals enormous waves rolling through the Milky Way's outer disk. Our galaxy is warped, corrugated and anything but still.

The Discovery

The Milky Way is not a neat, flat record. Researchers mapping more than 30,000 molecular clouds have found widespread wave-like corrugations running through the galaxy's outer molecular disk.

The [Nature Astronomy study](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-026-02938-y) used carbon-monoxide observations from the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting survey. After modelling and subtracting the galaxy's larger warp, the team found coherent vertical displacements hidden underneath it.

What Makes It Strange

These are not small wrinkles. The radial waves rise and fall by roughly 100 to 200 parsecs and repeat across wavelengths of about 3.9 to 7.9 kiloparsecs. The researchers also identified an azimuthal mode extending around 40 kiloparsecs through the outer disk.

Molecular clouds are the cold reservoirs where stars form. Finding the pattern in this gas shows that the ripples belong to the galaxy's physical structure, not merely to one unusual sample of stars.

The galactic floor is moving beneath every map we draw.

The Implications

Corrugations can preserve the fingerprints of past dynamical disturbances. Interactions with satellite galaxies, spiral structure and other gravitational forces are among the mechanisms researchers investigate when reconstructing how a disk was shaken.

The new map does not identify one culprit. It provides something more useful: measured scales for the waves, spread across a huge portion of the outer Milky Way, that future simulations must reproduce.
