The Zone of Silence
The Zone of Silence — an exploration from JitterSnap's Mystery Atlas collection.
The Signal
In the desert of Northern Mexico, there's a stretch of land where signals die, radios go silent, compasses spin, locals call it La Zona del Silencio, the zone of silence..
The Discovery
Officially, it's just geology, a magnetic anomaly, they say, but the stories go deeper... In the 1970s, a U.S... test missile veered wildly off course... It wasn't just off by miles, it landed right in the center of the zone as if it had been pulled there..
The Unfolding
When recovery teams arrived, they experienced strange effects, equipment failed, watches stopped, and some claim they saw, figures... Local speak of lights in the sky, objects that rise and fall without sound, and travelers who vanish only to reappear hours later, miles away, confused, dehydrated, and mumbling about the whispering... Scientists attempted to study the zone again in the 1990s, but each time they tried to set up instruments, they failed, as if something didn't want to be recorded... It just turned itself off... And yet, the animals act differently here, migration patterns shift, some species appear, that don't belong, and disappear just as fast..
The Question
So what is the zone of silence, a natural magnetic anomaly, a rift in something deeper or a boundary, between frequencies not meant to cross, and if it is a doorway, who or what is listening on the other side?
