This File Wasn't Here Yesterday

This File Wasn't Here Yesterday — an exploration from JitterSnap's Reality Glitches collection.

The Signal

You sit down at your computer, a file is open, you don't remember creating it, but it's in your handwriting, your voice, your name, you didn't make it..

The Discovery

So who did?.. Digital glitches are easy to ignore, a wrong file name, a folder that vanishes, auto-correct that feels a little too confident, but what if the system is changing things behind the scenes?.. Let's talk about phantom files... Reddit threads are full of people claiming documents appeared on their drives, things they never downloaded... Some describe opening test files filled with broken code, strange coordinates, or even personal information, they never shared... Other times, it's a photo, one you never took, of you, from an angle you couldn't reach..

The Unfolding

Glitches maybe, but then there's the deletion problem, some users swear their journals, or entire years of backups, are simply gone, no recovery, no trace, like those memories were erased... And what about files that rewrite themselves?.. One person reported saving a document... When they reopened it, it had rewritten the last two paragraphs into something they hadn't typed, something deeply personal, and a little too knowing... Could AI do this?.. Sure, could malware maybe, but sometimes the systems aren't connected to anything... What if reality, or whatever simulates it, is using your devices to patch memory gaps to insert or delete things without you noticing?.

The Question

If you didn't lose that file, you lost access because something revoked it.
