The eruption appears to have occurred during Northern Hemisphere winter. At Lake Chala, it was followed by modest cooling and acute drought lasting less than two years, not a prolonged regional volcanic winter.

The paper does not erase every consequence of Toba worldwide. Lake Chala is one regional archive, and climate responses can differ with latitude, circulation and distance from an eruption. The result specifically constrains eastern equatorial Africa.

Are We Looking at the Wrong Threat?

The finding weakens the strongest version of the claim that Toba nearly eliminated humans through a long African volcanic winter. It also shows why extinction stories need clocks: eruption size alone does not reveal how long dangerous conditions persisted where people lived.

Modern civilisation remains vulnerable to a major eruption through aviation, food systems and tightly connected infrastructure. Toba's ancient record is not an all-clear. It is a reminder that catastrophe must be measured, not inferred from the size of the crater.
