Published in Environmental Research Letters by a team led by Sam Abernethy of Spark Climate Solutions, the paper adds up four natural feedbacks and finds they could amplify human-caused warming by 20 to 30 percent this century.

What's the Timeline
The extra heat lands this century, not in some distant era. The feedbacks would add an estimated 0.2 to 0.4 degrees Celsius by 2100 — the low end under rapid emission cuts, the high end under a dirtier path.

Crucially, these sources are largely absent from the Earth-system models guiding policy. The researchers used a reduced-complexity climate model to estimate the size of the gap.
Is It Preventable
The feedbacks scale with temperature, so the study's authors stress that cutting fossil-fuel emissions still shrinks the extra warming — this is a multiplier on our choices, not a doom switch. Stanford's Rob Jackson, a co-author, called the results a wake-up call for the next round of climate policy.
The uncomfortable part is timing: some of this warming could continue even after human emissions reach net zero, because the land keeps responding to heat already banked.
