Webb Finds a Black Hole Wearing a Star
A red point from cosmic dawn is too bright to be a star and too strange to be an ordinary galaxy. The leading explanation is a black hole wrapped in a solar-system-sized shell of hydrogen.
The Discovery
A pinpoint in a James Webb Space Telescope image has forced astronomers to sketch a new kind of cosmic object. Called MoM-BH*-1, it appears to contain a supermassive black hole buried inside an immense, star-like envelope of dense hydrogen.
The object existed about 660 million years after the Big Bang. According to the [peer-reviewed Nature paper](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-026-10846-4), its light is dominated by the black hole rather than a surrounding galaxy. The team estimates the central object at roughly 100,000 solar masses.
What Makes It Strange
Webb recorded an extreme Balmer break: the source's brightness plunges across a particular range of wavelengths. Its break is stronger than normal populations of stars can produce, while its spectrum contains almost no trace of elements beyond hydrogen and helium.
The researchers' model replaces the usual dust screen with a turbulent, dust-free hydrogen cocoon roughly the size of our Solar System. Nuclear fusion cannot explain something that looks stellar yet shines about 100 billion times brighter than the Sun; feeding a black hole can.
It wears the outline of a star, but the engine is an abyss.
The Implications
The finding offers a physical explanation for Webb's mysterious little red dots, compact red sources common in the early Universe and scarce today. It also gives astronomers a possible glimpse of the conditions that let enormous black holes grow with bewildering speed.
That interpretation remains a model, not a direct photograph of the hidden engine. Follow-up spectra of MoM-BH*-1 and other red dots will test whether this is a rare cosmic costume or an entire missing phase of black-hole growth.
