Your Brain May Compute in Waves
A new MIT theory says the brain's wiring stores the pieces, but travelling electrical waves decide which pieces become thought. Consciousness may be less like software and more like weather.
Beyond the Circuit
The familiar brain-as-computer metaphor leaves something out. Neurons are wired through synapses, but rapidly rewiring those connections cannot explain every flexible decision made in a fraction of a second.
In a Journal of Neuroscience review highlighted by MIT's Picower Institute, Earl Miller, Scott Brincat and Jefferson Roy propose another layer: travelling brain waves performing analog computation.
The Hidden Control System
The theory assigns different jobs to structure and motion. Synapses hold representations such as memories and goals; rhythmic electrical activity helps decide which representations become active, where and when.
- slower alpha and beta waves can carry top-down control;
- faster gamma activity can represent incoming sensory information;
- intersecting waves can add, subtract and coordinate activity across space and time.
The wiring may store the world. The waves may assemble the moment.
Where Consciousness Enters
The authors propose that consciousness emerges when dynamic wave patterns organise the cortex into a globally integrated state. They point to anaesthesia studies in which drugs with different molecular mechanisms all disrupt large-scale wave organisation as consciousness disappears.
That is evidence for a relationship, not a solved mechanism. The review offers a theory that gathers years of experimental findings into one framework; it does not demonstrate that wave interference alone creates subjective experience.
The Test Ahead
The researchers say the next step is to look directly for signatures of analog computation in brain-wave patterns. That makes the proposal falsifiable: the predicted operations should be detectable rather than remaining metaphor.
If those signatures appear, the brain will look less like a machine executing one instruction after another. It will look like a physical field continuously arranging its own circuitry into thought.
