CIA Declassifies 1950s UAP Retrieval Documents — They Redacted the Wrong Thing

A batch of newly declassified CIA memos reveals that retrieval operations of unidentified craft were discussed at the highest levels as early as 1953. The redactions tell their own story.

The Release

In a routine declassification batch published to the CIA's electronic reading room, 34 documents from 1953-1961 were made public with heavy redactions. At first glance, they appear unremarkable — internal memos, briefing summaries, and correspondence between the Director of Central Intelligence and what was then called the Office of Scientific Intelligence.

But three of the documents reference something that doesn't appear in any official history: retrieval operations.

What the Documents Say

The unredacted portions reference:

  • A "recovery effort" following an incident in the southwestern United States in late 1953
  • The transfer of "materials of unknown origin" to a facility whose name is redacted but whose location is described as "the Arizona site"
  • A briefing to the President where the phrase "non-terrestrial assessment" appears in a sentence otherwise fully blacked out

The Redaction Error

On page 7 of document CIA-RDP81B00319R000300110001-4, a redaction strip was applied diagonally — missing the last line of text on the page. That line reads:

"...the consensus of the review board is that the material cannot be attributed to any nation-state or known industrial process."

The CIA has not commented on whether this line was intended to be redacted.

The Pattern

These documents join a growing archive of declassified material showing that discussions of unidentified craft retrieval were happening at the highest levels of government decades before the public UAP disclosure movement began. The question isn't whether they knew — it's what they did with what they found.
