The Civilization That Predates the Oldest Known Ruins
Göbekli Tepe was supposed to be the oldest. Then researchers found something 200 metres deeper — and it's deliberately buried too.
The Problem with Göbekli Tepe
Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Turkey revolutionised archaeology when it was dated to 9600 BCE — 6,000 years older than Stonehenge and built by people who supposedly hadn't invented agriculture. The site itself was deliberately buried, which raised the obvious question: why would a pre-literate society bury their own monument?
What Was Found Underneath
In 2024, ground-penetrating radar surveys at Göbekli Tepe revealed something unexpected: approximately 200 metres below the known structures, the radar detected regular geometric patterns consistent with worked stone. The shapes are too deep for any known excavation technology of the period and too regular to be natural geology.
The research team, led by Dr. Schmidt's successor at the German Archaeological Institute, has been cautious in their statements:
- The patterns are approximately 15 metres across
- They show right angles and parallel lines not found in natural rock formations
- Initial depth estimates suggest the structures could be older than 15,000 years
The Younger Dryas Problem
The Younger Dryas was a sudden cooling event that lasted from roughly 12,900 to 11,700 years ago. A growing body of research suggests it was caused by a cosmic impact — and that it may have wiped out an existing civilization.
If there was a civilization before the Younger Dryas, and it was advanced enough to build in stone, where are the ruins?
They might be buried. Under Göbekli Tepe.
"We've been looking for the wrong thing — a pre-Younger Dryas civilization wouldn't look like us. It would look like people who knew something was coming and tried to bury what mattered."
The team is seeking funding for a deep-core drilling program to obtain physical samples.
